The message behind the Yellow Ribbon Project is simple. It is one of acceptance, second chances and most importantly, HOPE. Hope for the ex-offenders and their families; hope for all those who made a mistake but are genuine in turning over a new leaf; and hope for those who believed in giving everyone a second chance to change and become contributing members of society. For this year, Yellow Ribbon Project 2005 will be launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loongon 3rd Sep at the Tie-A-Yellow-Ribbon-Walk.

Tie-a-Yellow-Ribbon-Walk on 3 Sep 05 (Launch event) will be flagged off by Prime Minister Lee at 8.00 am. Venue is at the vacant land next to the Old Changi Prison wall and highlights are as below.

* PM will walk into the prison and collect handmade ribbons from the ex-offenders

* Every participant will then have two yellow ribbons ??the first is to be worn as they walk the extra mile??from Changi to Pasir Ris. This shows the importance of building bridges of hope between offenders and society. At the end point, Pasir Ris Town Park, participants will tie their other yellow ribbon onto designated Yellow Ribbon Trees, even as they enjoy the post-walk programme and entertainment.

* The Trees. At the end of the walk, the Yellow Ribbon Trees, with ribbons intact, will be distributed to key locations in the different CDCs, where other members of public can also hang their ribbon onto the trees. This further creates a ripple effect of awareness, acceptance and action.

Special goodie bags are also up for grabs for the 1st 6,000 registrants.

The Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) and the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) ElderCare Co-Operative Ltd with the support of the NYAA Council is organising a national photo contest entitled :
"Vitality & Me" Photo Contest.
Young photo are encouraged to take their camera and capture the robustness and vitality of the Senior Citizens around them as they engage in different roles like mentoring, grand-parenting, sports, arts, recreation and volunteering activities. Selected photographes will be exhibited at various public venues and will also be compiled into a pictorial coffee table book at the endf of the year.

The NYAA Council would like to encourage you to participate in this national photo contest. Submission of Entries :

Singapore Sports Council Sports Grants for AY2005/2006

Dear Leaders,

As per last year, the Singapore Sports Council is offering 10 sports grants. Details are as follows: Singapore Sports Council Sports Grants for AY2005/2006 Application period: 20 July to 19 August 2005

Eligibility:
i) Must be Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents.
ii) Have represented Singapore at youth or national levels.
However, those who have not attained these levels but have contributed significantly to sports at NYP may also be considered.
iii) Must have satisfactory academic results.
iv) Financial background is taken into consideration.

Quantum: S$1,000/year Successful applicants will receive the award for one year
Forms: Application forms are obtainable at Student Services Centre (Blk A, Level 2) OR Student Affairs Office (Blk E, Level 4)

Leadership : One Crazy Adventure

Dear all You are probably aware that our very own Singapore Adventurer Mr Khoo Swee Chiow will attempt to seim the English Channel in August 2005
Before he embarks on his adventure, the NYAA Council has invited Mr Khoo Swee Chiow to talk about his expedition on Saturday, 30 July 2005 at the Singapore Polytechnic Auditorium from 2pm to 3pm.

Generally, he will speak about adventure and his life, the ups and downs, the type of training, discipline and hardship he has to o through to get to where he is now. He will also talk about how he finds his strnegth. This presentation is free-of-charge. Which is not the usual case. And you can bring your friends along. Pls let me know if you're interested so that I can reserve the seats.

Volunteers needed for Marymount Centre

Marymount Centre was established in 1984 by a group of sisters, headed by Sister Gabriel. Our first main objective for setting up the centre is to provide a place for the kids, mostly from the school opposite the centre, Marymount Covent Primary School. We felt that the children always wander around not having a proper place to go or study, and so we decided to set up a place for the children to play and study after school. Usually we only take children who are from single-parent families or low-income families, but as years gone by, we realised that some kids who have both parents working also have no place to go after school. So we decided to take in those children too regardless if they were from single-parent, low-income or some other backgrounds.
Besides letting the children have a place to study and play, we strive to develop the children into all-rounders. We will also provide conselling to these children, teach them life skills like having cookery classes. Our centre opens from 7am to 7pm, weekdays only, so usually the primary 1s to 3s students will be in the centre in the morning, whereas the primary 4s to 6s will coming in, in the afternoons.

Now, our main aim now in the centre is to actually help bring up the grades of the children, especially getting help in their subjects like English and Chinese. The age group of all this children are primary school children. We need your help in giving tution to all these children, most preferred way would one to one. As we only have 3 to 4 staff serving about 30 children, we really need all the help we can get to help these children. The place is at 790 Thomson Road, Singapore 298142. A special project with the Deaf

The year 2005 marks two important milestones.

First, SIngapore will be celebrating its 40th year of independence.
Second, Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) will be marking the 50th anniversary as well. In celebration of these two special occasions, you are invited to come together with some of the Deaf for a special project, which hopefully can be recorded in the Guinness Worlds Records. During the National Day Parade 2005, you will be part of the congregation to sign the national pledge and also another song at Marina South on 9 Aug 2005.

But before you can do that, you will be given a 2-session training session on basic Deaf Awareness and the sign language.

The training sessions will be held in NYP in mid-June and transport will be provided to Marina South on 9 Aug 05.

You get to learn the sign language and you can also clock this in as part of your Community Service requirement for your NYAA. Interested ?

HSBC TreeTop Walk (HSBC TTW)

Dear all

The NYAA Students' Club, together with GEO Council, is organising an outing to the HSBC TreeTop Walk (HSBC TTW) at the MacRitchie Reservior. This HSBC TTW is the hightlight of several long hiking routes in MacRitchie that brings you through different stages of mature secondary forest. The first of its kind in Singapore and in the region, this free-standing suspension bridge connects the two highest points (Bukit Pierce and Bukit Kalang) in MacRitchie and offers a bird's eye view of the community of plants and animals that live in the forest canopy.

The total lengh of the walkway is about 250m and its height from the forest floor varies, with the hightest point at 25m. What can you see up there? Instead of arching your necks to observe the canopy, you will then now be able to catch a glimpse of the vibrant "high life" of the forests at their eye level. From this high vantage point, you'll be able to have a closer observation of the animal community in the canopy of take a peek at the flowers or fruits of tall trees and climbers and their pollination activities.

This outing will be on Sat 23 Apr 04 from 9.30am - 2pm and its FREE !!!
Attire : T-shirt, shorts and comfortable walking shoes Transport will be provided from NYP to the reservoir and back to NYP.

Dear all There will be a One-Room flat cleaning organised by the Community Service Club and Cheng San Community Center. The project aimed to help the lower-income families around Cheng San. Volunteers will be helping them to clean and wash their flats.

Photography Workshop

Mr Darren Soh, a NYAA Gold Award holder, will be coming to share his experiences in photography as well as using photography to help the community at large.
Darren started the NYAA programme while he was in Secondary school in 1990 and he picked up photography under the skills section of the programme to be used toward the achieving the NYAA bronze standard.

He is a sociologist by training but is presently a fulltime photographer by choice. He started working as a photographer when he joined The Straits Times Picture Desk as a photography intern in 1997.Since 2001, he has worked as an independent editorial and commercial photographer. His photographs have been featured in magazines such as DestinAsian, Dynasty, German GEO, Gourmet Traveller, Gulf Air, Silver Kris, etc.Besides commissioned work, Darren spends his time on various personal projects, the most recent of which was a joint effort between Singapore's National Library Board and himself to photographically document the Stamford Road Library's last days. He recently published his first book titled While You Were Sleeping; a collection of nocturnal landscape photography from Singapore.Darren is also a volunteer photographer with Singaporean relief aid organisation Mercy Relief and has travelled with them to Sri Lanka and Thailand to cover post tsunami relief efforts.Darren has received several awards including - The International Photography Awards (IPA)2004 and the Commonwealth Photographic Awards 2004, etc.

Some information on Taman Negera
Spanning 4,343 sq. km and sprawled across the mountainous interiors of Kelantan, Pahang, and Terengganu is Taman Negara, Malaysia's premier national park. Formerly known as King George V National Park, the area was declared a national park by the three sultans of the above mentioned states as early as 1939 for the sole purpose of protecting and preserving the flora and fauna indigenous to this area.
This is seen as a natural move as Taman Negara is thought to be one of earth's oldest rain forest, with a history that stretches back to 130 million years ago. Undisturbed for a millennia, it maintains a natural habitat for a variety of flora and fauna, many of which have become highly specialized and are inter-linked with other species in both parasitic and symbolic ways.
Size : 4,343 sq. km.
Highest Point : Gunung Tahan (2,187 meters).
Flora Fauna : Over 10,000 species of plants, 350 species of birds. Local mammals include mouse deer, barking deer, tapirs, wild boars, elephants, leopards, tigers, and monkeys.

What to do there : Bird watching, cave exploration, jungle trekking, guided nature walks, mountain climbing, and more.You will be taken on this expedition by experienced guides who will share with you on what this vast rainforest has to offer.
Challenge your mental and physical strength by completing this expedition.

Buddhist Fellowship's Firefly Mission, together with Tisarana Buddhist Association and Brahm Education Centre are launching a Suffering Relief Program for the Tidal Wave victims in Sri Lanka.
We appeal to you for 3 types of assistance:

1. Donation of items:
Medicine, first aid items, sanitary pads, toothbrush, toothpaste, tin food, dry food and CLEAN (new if> possible) blankets, towels and clothes.
Please pack them in bags or boxes and label them separately, eg.Food, Blankets, medicine. Clothes to be separated and labeled MALE, FEMALE and CHILDREN bag.
Boxes are preferred but please do NOT seal.
ALL items are to be sent to Tisarana Buddhist Association at 90 DUKU Road, Off STILL Road (East Coast).

2. Donation of cash:
Cash donations are collected at Brahm Education Centre. Programme Highlight:
We will be playing some games among NYAA participants organised by Jie Hui and Ruzaini.
We also have gift exchange among NYAA and NYPSU people during the gift exchange session.
We also have refreshments that are brought by the participants of this event, NYAA participants and NYPSU members on that day.

Request of Helpers For Blood Donation Drive 2005

Hi All,

I am from the NYP Community Service Club and would like to invite youto join us in being a helper for our bi-annually Blood Donation Drivein January 2005.

Details for the Drive are as follows:

Monday 10 January 2005 to Thursday 13 January 2005

Theatre For the Arts (Function Room)
- Shift 1 - 8.30am to 11.30am
- Shift 2 - 11.00am to 2.00pm
- Shift 3 - 1.30pm to 4.30pm

Duties for the helpers are mainly ushering the donors, providinginformation to donors, and compiling the admin numbers of the donors.
More details will be given in due time.I would also need a small amount of people (less than 10) to help mein planning the drive.
So do indicate your preference, and note thatit is based on a First Come First Served basis.This event can be clocked as part your NYAA Community Service project too!
A CCA point will be given if you complete a minimum of 3 shifts,irregardless of which day you are doing.
Please do give me your reply ASAP, and rope along your friends to helpus if possible.
I need lots of helpers!!! =)

Ren Ci Charity Car Wash

Hi everyone,

Kampong Chai Chee CC Youth Executive Committee is organising a Renci Charity Car Wash,in conjucton with the charity show on 9th Jan 05.
The Car wash will be a day before. All proceeds will be donated to Renci.
Below is the information:

Date:8th Jan 05(Saturday,one day before Renci Charity Show)

Time: From 2pm to 8pm+++

Venue:Kampong Chai Chee Community Centre Car park.

Cost: minimum $6/- per car.(Hopefully we can collect more than $6/- so as to be able to donate more money to the needy,and note that it will be wash on the exterior of the car only)

Guest of Honor will be the MP for East Coast GRC,advisor to Kampong Chai Chee,Mr Tan Soo Khoon.

We are not advertised by Mediacorps and mediaworks as we need to pay them for the advertisement.
Therefore we decided to save that money so that more money will be given.
We seek everybody help,to forward this email to their friends so that more people will be aware of this event.

Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youthand Sports would like to invite NYP students to participate in the CaringNite cum Countdown to 2005 on 31 December 2004 to be held at the JurongEast MRT Open Field.

Guest-of-Honour for the event is Mrs Lee Hsien Loong, wife of PrimeMinister Lee.
